Thank You Notes Vol. 13

Thank you holiday misfits which is the group of friends that we have that all come from different places but are staying in the NYC area this weekend. We shall drink, stuff our faces and all cheer for the Vikings because friends support friends.

Thank you leggings for fitting after I stuff my face with all the food.

Thank you New York City for providing me with weird moments. I already shared with you my celebrity run-in and then this weekend we encountered lots of protests and the most vulgar encounter I've ever had with a human. Life is never boring. Also, you've been really pretty to look at this week.

Thank you Patagonia for being awesome. They gave all their employees the day off on election day and now they've announced that they are donating 100% of profits on Black Friday to environmental non-profits. Hats off to you. I'll definitely spend some money there on Friday.

Thank you parking Gods for saving us a spot right in front of our apartment. We grocery shopped today for our Thanksgiving meal prep and we will need to carry those prepped dishes back to the car on Thursday AM. Sometimes parking in our neighborhood sucks, but today - it didn't.

Thank you dog loving people for checking out the giveaway from Monday. My sister in law is awesome and so is her Etsy shop and I'm happy to help spread the word. Go enter if you haven't. Also, look how cute my dogs are.

Thank you Fed Up on Netflix for giving us a health goal for the new year. We are going to take a break from sugar for 8 weeks. We are going to use this book for a game plan and some recipes and we are actually super excited.

Thank you Sawyer who is my awesome nephew. He's the easiest person on my Christmas list to shop for because he's a three year old boy who loves trucks, trains and construction equipment. It brings back memories of my little brother as a toddler. Now he's a 26 year old... WHAT?!?!

I usually have these thank you notes as a funny little post on the blog, but I am truly grateful for the spot I'm at in my life. So thank you real life for the people in my life, the places I get to call home and my dogs. I am insanely lucky and I work hard every day to say thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Tell me what you're most thankful for.

Gift Ideas for Dog Lovers + a Giveaway

'Tis the season to shop for gifts. We have a few things purchased already, but we aren't as far ahead as we'd like to be. I love looking at gift guides people share because they point me to things I might not have thought of. Today I wanted to share some ideas for the dog lovers in your life, plus I have an awesome giveaway because I love dog people and I know there's lots of you out there.

Dog Lover Gift Guide

8 awesome ideas for the dog lovers in your life:

1. Some awesome wall art featuring their breed of dogs. This Etsy Shop has some of the best pictures.

2. This amazing mug that pretty much says everything for you.

3. One Hope Wine offers this gift crate with Pinot Noir and dog toys. The proceeds for any box purchased help shelter animals find a forever home.

4. Funny calendars make great gifts or stocking stuffers. I have one person on my list that gets one every year and I'm thinking about getting this one this year.

5. Zen Dog Garden Sculptures from Uncommon Goods - they also have other animals.

6. There are so many awesome dog books. Inside of a Dog is pictured above, but this book is one of my top ten favorite books of all time.

7. The amazing shirts that Taylor has created. She has lots to choose from, but there are a few dog related ones that are my favorites. You can see her whole shop here.

8. And last, but definitely not least, my awesome sister-in-law has an Etsy shop with dog accessories that are pretty amazing. The bowtie shown above is one that Quincy wears around the neighborhood often. They slide right onto their collar. She has some pretty cute models (shown below.) She also makes snuggle sacks which are dog beds that allow the pups to climb inside. Lola is a big fan.

Since the holidays are approaching quickly, we wanted to help you get a head start on the dog lovers in your life. We are giving away an awesome t-shirt and a holiday themed bowtie to one lucky reader.

Grandma Selfies, Survival and Gummy Bears: Life Lately

I survived the election, our North Carolina vacation and a work/fun quick trip back to Minnesota. With all of that behind us, it looks like we'll be having a fairly quiet holiday season here in New York.

We snuck in some family time in MN, we met some babies, we surprised a friend at her baby shower, we worked in our headquarters and I survived the solo mission of driving from Newark, to the dog boarder to pick up the kids and then the commute in traffic to Brooklyn without crying.

Since it's been a while since I've checked in, I need to just word vomit here. Welcome to random thoughts Thursday. To add a little fun, I'm going to use the new "special characters" menu in blogger.

😰 I just walked to get groceries and stumbled upon the cutest dog. When I looked up to greet the owner, I realized I was standing two feet from Vincent Chase... well, Adrian Grenier. Instead of being a normal person and just saying hi, I just walked away quickly. I really need to work on my people skills. I think he's a super awesome human that spends lots of money and time helping rescue dogs and the environment, but I couldn't seem to utter a simple "hello."

😇 I've decided that 3 month old babies are perfect. They are big enough to hold without thinking you'll break them, they have figured out awesome facial expressions and they aren't old enough to run away when you're trying to cuddle them. We have lots of friends with babies this age and I can't get enough of them.

😋 I had my first experience with Sugarfina rose gummy bears and now I wish they would just send them to me weekly. I'm afraid to look at how much they cost. My mom gave me a box and I ate them in one sitting.

😁 In Minnesota, the snow is supposed to fly this weekend, but back here in Brooklyn, fall is in full bloom. The trees still have leaves on them and our windows are still open (some days.) I love that the seasons here really end up being 3 months long.

😎 We signed up for HBONow for the winter seasons and I can't believe the things I've been missing out on. Since we had already caught up on GoT, we are now obsessively watching John Oliver and Bill Maher and we will probably start Westworld once it gets a little colder. Shockingly, I've never watched Sex and the City, so I watched the first episode of that last night and I will probably indulge in a little more.

😔 My 2017 planner arrived and I switched it up this year. I keep staring at it, but I'm not totally sure if I love it yet. Change is hard, you know?

😉 Last, but not least, daylight savings time. I think I might be the only person that kind of loved it this year. I've been going to bed earlier and getting up earlier. Having the sun shining early in the morning is a very helpful reminder to get out of bed. Plus, we just have to remember that the days will start to get longer again in 5 weeks. In the meantime, twinkling lights will start to appear soon and we will be able to enjoy the holiday spirit.

I'll leave you with this picture of the awesome ladies in my family. Just another to add to the "selfies with Grandma" collection.

Election Day Has Arrived

Today is the day. All of the SNL skits, debate shenanigans, primary craziness. It's all coming to an end or at least changing to a different kind of crazy. We were up before the sun this morning so we could get to the polls before diving into our work.

I wanted to share some pictures from our early morning walk around Washington DC because it was a perfectly timed visit for us. We've spent the last few months listening to the Presidential podcast that reviews each of our 44 presidents and gives you a little more information on what kind of leader they were. Walking through the FDR Memorial, seeing the Washington Monument in the reflecting pool and even Thomas Jefferson's statue in the early morning sunlight - it helped remind me of all the things this country has been through in it's history.

Today you have a chance to impact where we go next. There is no excuse. You can't say your vote doesn't matter. We have more battleground states this year than ever. The absentee and early voting numbers are off the charts. There are so many senate seats up for grabs. D.C. is on the ballot to possibly become the 51st state. Your vote matters.

"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for."
-President Barack Obama

Happy Election day friends. Pray for NYC tonight. It's going to be completely insane. I think we are planning on watching everything from our living room, but you never know :)

NC Road Trip: Recap of the Senses

I did this for our Costa Rica trip and I like to recap our vacations this way while they are still fresh in my brain. We are in Washington DC tonight for a quick stop before we drive home tomorrow. In the last week, we have visited Baltimore, drove the Blue Ridge Parkway, explored Asheville and Lake Lure, played with friends in Charlotte and we are spending our last evening in DC. It was a good old fashioned road trip. So, here is a quick recap of some of the simple things that I want to remember:

I heard...

Southern accents. Birds singing. Peace & quiet. A good bluegrass playlist. So many episodes of the Presidential Podcast.

I tasted...

Cheerwine. Lots of local beers. The best crab cake benedict I've ever had. Fritters. Some diners, drive-ins and dives favorites. But sadly, no hushpuppies... this time.

I smelled...

Leaves on the ground. BBQ Sauce. Bonfires. New baby smell (thanks to the tiny human of our friends.) Wet dogs. The best hotel shampoo/conditioner.

I saw...

The view from above the clouds. One of the most beautiful lakes I've ever seen. Fall colors everywhere. Beautiful historic houses. New friends and old friends. The Blue Ridge Mountains. The history of our nation's capitol.

I felt...

Fog on my face on top of the mountains. Genuine kindness of strangers. So many car cuddles from Lola. Awe of the history in this part of the country. Peace at the lack of email notifications.

A road trip was the perfect escape. We got to explore a whole new part of country while seeing some wonderful friends. I'll share lots more pictures soon, but for now, I'm going to enjoy a glass of wine and some cable TV in our comfy hotel bed. 24 more hours of vacation.

November 1, 2016

Vacation time has arrived and it couldn't come soon enough. We had dreamed of a weeklong trip to Switzerland or a quick escape to a beach island, but after moving and a few crazy months of work insanity, we are hitting the road for a god old fashioned road trip to North Carolina. We are going to take in some fall colors, catch up with some friends in Charlotte and enjoy a few nights on a lake in the Smoky Mountains.

Here's a quick run through of some other things I'm up to. Currently, I'm...

Watching Big Bang Theory. I wish that show was on Netflix so I could binge the crap out of it. But instead, I have to wait until I'm in a hotel room.

Smelling the best soap ever. Kimpton hotels have the best toiletries. It's the only ones I always take from the hotel.

Excited for next Tuesday. It's Election Day and I can't wait for the commercials and constant news stories to die down a little bit. The length of time we have to put up with this is exhausting.

Dreaming about those trips I mentioned earlier in the post. I would love to see the Swiss Alps. I need to work on that as soon as possible.

Shopping for Christmas gifts. Trying to get a little bit of a jump on the holidays... at least the part that costs a bunch of money.

Thankful for a few days off with J and the pups to be outside. It looks like we got pretty lucky on the fall color timing. Follow along on Instagram to see the pics @insertclassyhere

Reading A Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. It's exactly what I wanted it to be. I'm still behind on my reading goals, but hoping to catch up a little bit on this trip.

Working on knitting a blanket. I learned to knit in college (which I laugh just reading back now) and used to make scarves and blankets, but I haven't picked up needles in a long time. It's kind of nice doing that while watching TV.

Listening to the new Head and the Heart album. After we saw them in concert, I haven't been able to get enough of their new stuff.

I'm off to finish prepping for our day of driving tomorrow. Let me know if you have any recommendations on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville or Charlotte. Happy November.
